Urban markup language.

A couple of years ago, Erik Davis wrote a short blurb for Wired Magazine on industrial street tagging, or as he dubbed it, Urban Markup Language. A vague recollection of that article popped into my head after reviewing a recent series of images I had posted to Flickr. I realized that I was consciously (or perhaps subconsciously) photographing these spraypainted ticks, arrows, lines and acronymonic noise for their colourful anti-aesthetic and blue-collar geekiness. I figured that other people were probably attracted to this form of street art as well, and after a bit of carefully executed tag surfing, I discovered I was right. Now we have a communal home for our obsession. The small, but growing Urban Markup Language Group on Flickr documents the transient, functional language of construction and reconstruction.
