Atom. Da bomb?

The gang at Blogger recently announced that its auto-generated newsfeed functionality now supports the Atom syndication format. Can anyone tell me if there is any reason not to switch from an RSS-formatted newsfeed over to Atom? Based on what I've been reading over on AtomEnabled.org, it sounds all fine and dandy. The main catch seems to be that not all client-side newsfeed aggregators (my personal favourite, NetNewsWire, for instance) fully support Atom - yet. I think I'm going to wait a bit longer to switch the feed for this site over to Atom, but it sure seems promising. Additional details explaining why Blogger decided to go the Atom route can be found in this post from last summer on the Blogger Developer Network blog. Basically, it means that getting information in and out of weblogs just got easier.

Usenet is dead. Long live Usenet.

Those supamonstermacheads over at the mighty Panic have unleased a brand new OS X application called Unison which looks like it actually makes the Usenet usable again. Gosh, I'm feeling all 1993 again. Sniff.

Several things that need mentioning.

Quite a few items have caused my ears to perk up recently, but dagnabbit if I don't have the time to properly comment on them. So here I sit, attempting to post at least a short little blurb about each them so, at the very least, I can refer back them at some point in the future. Here goes. Anyone who has admired the monochromatic simplicity of a Susan Kare icon or bopped their noggin to a stream of low-bit chip music will appreciate 1x1 - a slick new book for pixel pimps like me to drool over. Published by the casa grande del diseño, Vasava Artworks. Hello, upgrade alert: BBEdit 7.1.2 was released today. So there's no room for adventure when specifying fonts for the web? Think again. Jeff Croft walks us through some alternate typographic choices proving that Verdana isn't the solution to everything. Make sure to absorb the additional details provided in Code Style's font survey - easily the best visual web type sampler I've even seen. Different District has deftly compiled more Apple-branded video propaganda than you can shake a six foot ADB cable at. The iTunes Music Store RSS Generator is simply too sweet for words. Aggregate me, baby. And speaking of one-bit icon appreciation... Folklore.org is a newish site currently dedicated to collecting stories and anecdotes relating to the original Macintosh. I'll just have to contribute something to the cause. It's in my blood. Oh, and you must enjoy the graphic wonderfulness of these pre-printed paper products from Dsix Design. Oof. I now return you yo your regularly scheduled blog digestion.

The bold and the feckless.

I'll admit to considering some Adobe typefaces to be of questionable aesthetic value and still others as downright fugly. But, I don't think I have ever run across an Adobe font that's been annoying.

Curiously found mints.

Well, they're not actually mints... they're better than mints. Courteously observant viewer Eric Gordon pointed out that Callard & Bowser produced a limited run of Ginger Altoids at some point last year. Ginger. Now that's a flavour I can wrap my lips around. It's too bad these tasty little babies are no longer available in the stores. If I was really desperate for a tin or two, I could always go venturing through the aisles of the world's largest garage sale. "Might go nice with the Wasabi ones...", Eric mentions ever so casually. Indeed they would.

[ Update ] In an odd twist of online retail fate, the ever so kind Michael Ian Roth pointed out that Ginger variations are now available via the official Altoids Shoppe. I swear on a stack of collector tins that they weren't there earlier in the week. Now that's curious.

Alternatoids.

Dear Callard and Bowser-Suchard, Inc.,

Please consider the following suggestions when developing new flavours and variations in your product line of Altoids (Curiously Strong) Mints. I realize that not all of these potential candidates will have the same mass appeal as your current selection of peppermint, spearmint, wintergreen or cinnamon. However, I think that some of them may open up significant - and until now, very much ignored - markets for your company. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Grant Hutchinson

Baked Panther Tognazzini.

I like Bruce Tognazzini. I respect Bruce Tognazzini. He knows what he's talking about, and he's usually talking about user interfaces. It's no secret that user interfaces are something that I thoroughly enjoy talking about myself. Well, it just so happens that Mr Tog has written three new articles relating to Panther and it's experience-related hits, misses and outright atrocious behavior. As can be expected, he manages to take another whack at his favourite OS X whipping boy, the Dock. I don't agree with everything he says, but I love the way he says it.

Molasses in January.

Yes, the old blog-stream is moving a might slow at the moment. But, it's only relative when you look at it in the right perspective. You see, if work wasn't keeping me so interested and otherwise occupied, I'd be blogging more here. Of course, part of what makes work so interesting and occupying is my ability to blog as part of my unofficial job description. So I guess when it comes right down to it, I'm blogging just as much as I had been before, just somewhere else. Another fortunate (and until now, unwritten) requirement of my current professional situation, is to make sure I hang around here and toss my two cents into the communal tip jar on a regular basis. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that if I wasn't posting so much over there and blogging so much at work, I'd be blogging more right here. Wait a minute, I am blogging here. Never mind. Now, who moved my molasses?

Animal cruelty.

Since becoming a dog owner (and apparently an official doorman to all quadrupedal mammalian lifeforms that happen to frequent our household), I must admit that I have become more sensitive to how animals are treated and respected as pets. It's one thing to want to celebrate and document your pet by having a professional photographer shoot a tasteful portrait, but what on this earth would possess an otherwise sane individual to do something like this to a poor, defenceless animal. Surely, the authorities need to be involved at some point.

What're you looking at?

Canada Customs and Revenue Agency says: Your package has been examined.
It's one thing to have someone examine your package, but it's an entirely different matter when they leave you a note attached to it. Ba-da-boom. But seriously folks, it's nice to see that the Canadian customs agents are keeping our country safe from heinous import goods such as cotton-blend t-shirts and Styrofoam® packing material. Those things could destroy our economy faster than an unverified case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. It's mad, I tell you. Absolutely mad. Thank you, I'm here all week. Please tip your waitress.

Furthermore.
