Flickr goes gamma.

Never mind that previous post about the languishing state of beta that Flickr has been occupying for gosh knows how long. They've just gone gamma with a hatload of snappy new navigation, organization, search, and buddy-related functionality. I'd blather more about all the changes, but I must go click and play...

It doesn't get much beta than this.

I've been tossing my pixels at Flickr for nearly a year and half, and aside from a few post-Yahoo! growing pains, the system seems solid. One question has popped into head on several occasions, as I'm sure it has for other Flickrpeeps... when the heck will Flickr ever come out from under the beta banner? Toss your penny into the group pool and register your vote on the Flickr Beta Meter. While you're at it, vote for your top feature request or bug fix. Brought to you by the fine folks behind Flagrantdisregard's Flickr Toys.

Temporarily unrebooted.

So, the first of May has come and gone. So has a deadline that I was dearly hoping to make. If you'll notice, this site is not sporting any of the previously promised, lovingly redesigned, standards-savvy, tableless, CSS goodness. Well, there's a reason for that. It's simply not ready for prime time. I'm not happy with it, and it's not finished. I don't want to make this sound like the redesign has been pushed to the back burner... it's still in progress. Great gobbing leaps of progress are occurring, albeit sporadically. Right now, family and other commitments come first... as it should be. Bits and pieces will emerge slowly. Promise. In the meantime, the RSS feed has been finally switched over to use full descriptions (why I hadn't implemented that previously is anyone's guess), and I'm tinkering with using the pop-up Blogger comment thingie.

Flickr founders find some time.

Are they the only folks who made Flickr what it is today? No. But they're arguably the most important pair of webheads behind it. Time Magazine took note of the influence that Flickr has had on self-publishing, the nearly-ubiquitous functionality of tag clouds, and being able to harness the energy behind a visual, creative community. Both Caterina Fake and Stewart Butterfield have been featured in the current Time 100. On one hand, it makes me nervous when something as good as Flickr slips one notch closer to the mainstream. Part of me wishes Flickr could have been our little secret for just a while longer. Then again, the whole Yahoo! thing didn't seem to have caused much damage after all the dust settled. Still, it does this Canuck heart proud to see a great thing get recognized at this level. Congrats, all around.

Furthermore.
